Newspaper group Reach plc and Good Things Foundation: A partnership for digital inclusion
Leading newspaper group Reach plc recently donated over 1,200 pieces of equipment to Good Things Foundation’s National Device Bank.
Access to technology no longer a luxury
In today’s digital age, access to technology is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. At Reach, we have first-hand experience of how reliant people and businesses are on digital inclusion and access to the digital economy. That’s why we’re excited to share our recent collaboration with Good Things Foundation, the UK’s leading digital inclusion charity - an organisation committed to fixing the digital divide. Through this partnership, we’ve donated a range of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) products, including laptops, smartphones, and monitors, to support those most in need.
Giving WEEE a second life
Electrical and electronic waste, or WEEE, is one of the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide. As technology rapidly evolves, more products are discarded sooner, often still in good working condition. Rather than simply recycling or disposing of these items, Reach has chosen a path that benefits both society and the environment: reusing and redistributing this equipment to those who lack access.
This partnership with Good Things ensures our technology finds a new home where it can make a real difference. By donating our used kit, we’re not only reducing waste but also helping to close the digital divide by providing tools for individuals who are otherwise excluded from the digital world. Many of these recipients are among the most underserved in our society, including low-income families, elderly individuals, and people with disabilities who rely on affordable or donated technology to stay connected, informed, and productive.
Supporting digital inclusion: A shared vision
Digital inclusion lies at the heart of Good Things' mission, and it’s a goal we wholeheartedly support at Reach. With each piece of equipment we donate, we’re enabling people to connect to essential services, job opportunities, and news and social communities. This collaboration underscores our commitments to ESG, working toward a healthier and fairer society.
For us, this partnership aligns perfectly with our company’s evolving business model. As our operations and services become increasingly digitalised, we recognise the importance of ensuring that the digital economy we contribute to is accessible to everyone. This isn’t just a matter of social responsibility; it’s about helping to build a society where technology empowers individuals across all backgrounds to participate fully in the digital world.
Strengthening our ESG commitment
At Reach, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are central to our values and decision-making. The donation of WEEE products aligns directly with our ESG commitments:
Environmental: By repurposing electronics rather than discarding them, we’re reducing electronic waste and minimising our carbon footprint, supporting a circular economy and our commitment to zero WEEE waste to landfill.
Social: We’re investing in communities by providing essential technology to individuals who need it most, enhancing access to education, jobs, and news.
Governance: This initiative reflects our dedication to responsible business practices, ensuring that our growth as a digital company is accompanied by a positive social and environmental impact.
Through our partnership with Good Things, we’re not only advancing our ESG goals but also fostering a sense of purpose among our team and strengthening our commitment to sustainable, ethical practices.
Positive engagement for a purposeful partnership
This collaboration has been an inspiring journey of engagement and mutual respect. Working alongside Good Things has been a rewarding experience for our team, as we’ve witnessed first-hand how technology donations can empower individuals. The process was made easier through Good Things’ due diligence ensuring we do not compromise on our other commitments such as ensuring storage and secure access to any sensitive data.
Looking ahead
The success of this collaboration inspires us to think bigger. As we look to the future, we’re excited to explore new opportunities for positive impact, both through technology donations and innovative ESG initiatives that support the broader community. At Reach, we believe that business growth and social responsibility can, and should, go hand in hand.
